Since we’ve decided to move ahead with the producing the web series, one of the first things we needed to do was secure a place for auditions. Today we visited the African American Library at the Gregory School, a library and museum of sorts, built into a historic structure that was the first colored public school in Houston. I’d been wanting to check this place out for a while based solely on what it was – but since it’s also a part of the Houston Public Library system, I figured they’d have a meeting room or two that we could reserve (several other productions have held their auditions in the various libraries in town). And since Abby is Black and given the history of the building, I just felt it was a nice, symbolic way to kick off the show.  So off we went…

The facility is beautiful. Very peaceful and inspiring. And better yet, it has two great meeting rooms on the upstairs floor that would be perfect for auditions. I’m concerned about the potential noise level since the place is so quiet, but I’m sure it’s something we can work around – that is, if we get to use the place. I got a hold of an email address to write the person in charge and I’ll hit them up in the next couple of days to see if it’s available when we want it (December 3). I really hope it is…

While we were out, I took Shaundra by the coffee house that I considered the front runner for the location of the pilot shoot. Sure, the place is small, but it’s Black-run and that’s something I really want to enforce with this show – support of Black-owned business. But alas, after taking a look at the spot, Shaundra concluded that it was too small. And I agreed. I really wanted it to work out, but it wasn’t to be. And in the back of my mind I knew it. Nothing like having a confirming opinion to help you take off the rose-colored glasses. So the search for a location for Episode #1 continues – but there is a nice new family-owned cafe right down the street from us, and the owners are really nice…
